Rempstone CCTV Upgrade

Added on 30 August 2024

It’s not often that we ask you for money, but this is a special situation.

Rempstone’s CCTV system is a major factor in keeping the village free of the levels of crime and antisocial behaviour experienced in Wymeswold and East Leake. It has been instrumental in resolving several incidents every year. Most notable have been the theft of a cash machine in Shepshed, where we identified the vehicles involved, and the destruction of Rempstone’s post box. Then there have been less serious, but still important uses, such
as re-assuring residents that the torch being shone on their front doors at two in the morning belonged to the milkman.

So far in 2024 we have provided evidence to the Police of two vehicles involved in thefts in the village. One was opportunistic, the other an organised attack. This August we investigated a traffic collision on Main Street where one motorist failed to stop and exchange insurance details.

CCTV was installed 12 years ago as part of the Village Hall construction. It covers access to the building, central Main Street, and the Wysall Lane junction. Although still working satisfactorily it is prudent to replace the CCTV before it starts to fail. Newer cameras will provide better images. Upgrading will also provide facilities which reduce the time and effort required to investigate incidents.

The upgrade cost will be around £10,000, shared between the Village Hall and the Parish Council. Some of the cost will hopefully be met by grants and matched funding.

The Parish Council is funded by a proportion of Rushcliffe’s Council Tax. Rempstone’s tax rate is amongst the lowest in the borough. Paying for the CCTV upgrade through taxation would double, or even triple, residents’ Council Tax for 2025/26. The Parish Council believe that this would be unreasonable in any financial climate. Instead the Parish Council is looking to raise £4,500 by donations from those residents who are willing and able to contribute. £2,600 has already been pledged!
