If you are aged 60 or over and live in the Rushcliffe Borough, First Contact Signposting Scheme can put you in touch with a range of agencies that provide that help – just by completing one simple checklist.  There is no need to make numerous telephone calls and give the same information to lots of different people.

Working with public and voluntary services, First Contact gives you to access to information and advice on services including:

  • Assistance to claim benefits that you may be entitled to
  • Falls assessments and advice on falls prevention
  • Home safety and security advice
  • Repairs, adaptations and specialist equipment for homes
  • Energy saving improvements to help you keep warm and reduce energy bills
  • Housing advice
  • Information on activities and groups in your local community

Once you have completed and returned the checklist, you will be contacted by the relevant services who will offer advice and information on what could be available to you.  They may offer a home visit but will always contact you first (Remember to always ask for ID before letting someone you don’t know into your home).

" Mrs G of Arnold said she was very pleased with the services she had received, adding Just to receive a bit of reassurance and that she doesn't feel that she's on her own makes her feel a lot better. " First Contact user

If you or someone you know wants to complete a checklist then please telephone Nottinghamshire County Council Customer Service Centre on 08449 808080 or access it online at

Date for Digital Switchover

Most of the East Midlands will go digital from August 2011 when the analogue signal from the Waltham transmitter is turned off and viewers will receive their signal through a digital box.

To make sure that the over 75s are not left without a signal Rural Community Action Nottinghamshire have lauched a 'look after your neighbours' campaign.

The scheme also applies to certain other groups receiving benefits or who are blind or partially sighted.

The scheme can ensure that elegible people  have one TV capable of receiving a digital signal for just £40 or in some cases  free of charge.  Easy to use equipment is provided and there is a free 12 month aftercare service and helpline.

Most people entitled to help should receive written details regarding the changeover, but there is a risk some may be missed. Rural Community Action Nottinghamshire would like you to think about the elderly and vulnerable in your area and check that they are aware of the switchover and how to respond to their letter.

TV is often the main companion for these groups, so please  help to ensure that no-one in this area is left in the dark.

Dog warden

The Council employs a dog warden to encourage responsible dog ownership and enforce the law in relation to strays, fouling and barking. Ther service operates on standard office hours, 5 days per week, but there is always a dog warden on call to deal with strays, fouling and other dog related nuisances or problems.

You can contact them during office hours on 0115 981 9911 or out of office hours on 0115 981 1143.

Responsible dog ownership

The problems of dog fouling and strays remain high on the list of Rushcliffe Borough Council's priorities. The Council employs a dog warden to patrol the district specifically to control strays and reduce the incidence of fouling.

Fixed penalty tickets have been served on a regular basis and successful prosecutions have been taken for offenders who have failed to clean up after their dogs.

Stray dogs

Stray dogs are a nuisance: they can cause road traffic accidents, foul public areas and also frighten people.

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, dog wardens have the authority to seize stray dogs from public areas. If the dog is wearing a form of identification i.e. collar and tag, the dog warden will endeavour to return it to its owners on the first occasion.

Persistent stray dogs will be taken to the RSPCA shelter at Radcliffe-on-Trent where they will be held for up to seven days. During this time, owners can reclaim their dogs once they have paid a fine to this authority for the costs we have incurred.

If a dog is not reclaimed it will either be re-homed or, sadly, humanely destroyed.

24 hour service

Rushcliffe Borough Council operates a 24 hour service, 365 days a year, for the collection of stray dogs. If you have caught a stray dog or have confined one in a secure area call the Dog Wardens on 0115 981 9911 extension 734 during normal working hours (8.30am-5.00pm), or on the out of hours number 0115 981 1143. If you have lost your dog, contact the Dog Wardens (as above), with a full description of your dog and where the dog was lost. If the department receives a call about a stray dog which fits the description of your dog, we will endeavor to return it to you.

Flytipping

Streetwise - Flytipping

Fly-tipping is the illegal deposit of waste on any land. This includes any unwanted material produced by a household or business including general mixed waste, garden waste, construction waste, soil, furniture and liquids. In an effort to reduce the number of fly-tipping incidences, the Council provides a special refuse collection for large items.

Fly-tipping is a criminal offence. Anyone, including householders, caught fly-tipping can be prosecuted under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, with the maximum penalty being a £50,000 fine and/or twelve months imprisonment.

The Borough Council will prosecute anyone caught fly-tipping.

Report fly-tipping

If the fly-tipping is on the public highway or public land, tell the Council: report flytipping using their online form, or by contacting the Streetwise team by phone, fax, email or post. SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS. They will investigate the incident and arrange for the waste to be cleared.

If you discover fly-tipped waste after the tippers have left, please follow these simple guidelines:

• Do not touch the waste: fly-tipped waste can be dangerous - it may contain syringes, broken glass, asbestos, toxic chemicals or other hazardous substances.

• Visually inspect the waste: try to determine what the waste consists of and how much there is.

• Take note of its exact location: and also, whether it is in or near water.

• Do not disturb the site: there may be evidence that could help identify the culprits and lead to their prosecution.

If you see someone fly-tipping, try to make a note of:

• The day, date and time you saw the tipping.

• What you saw: how many people were flytipping and what they looked like; what they were actually doing; any vehicles involved - their make, colour and registration number.

• Where were you when you saw the flytipping: what kind of view you had; how far away you were; weather and light conditions.

• What was tipped: what it looked like; how much of it there was.

Prosecutions

The Council treats this problem very seriously and will prosecute anyone caught fly-tipping waste.
