Brian Kenney Bows Out
On A High Note
The carol singing evening on December 20 saw more than 20 singers performing in different parts of the village. The evening was rounded off with refreshments provided by the Village Hall committee and with the community joining in carols accompanied by David Simpkin in the Village Hall.
Brian Kenney, who has led the group for the past 33 years, announced his retirement having raised nearly £4,000 for the NSPCC over the years. Thanks to Brian for all his hard work and to everyone who made the 2011 carol singing an evening to remember.
Party Time for Village Children
Craft activities including making book marks and calendars formed some of the activities at the village children's Christmas party held in the Village Hall. Everyone enjoyed a good variety of cakes and a visit from Santa. Thanks to Gaynor Rice for organising the afternoon.
Christmas Services
The first of the two Christmas Eve services at All Saints Chruch was the popular Christingle Service held in the afternoon and which followed the theme of the birth of baby Jeus. The large congregation of children lit their own candles this year and formed a chain of passing on the light. The readings and collection were all performed by the children. Thanks to Sue Waterston and Gaynor Rice for all their hard work in arranging a very attractive service.
At 6.00 the church opened its doors again for the 2011 carol service. The beautifully decorated candle lit church saw a large congregation enjoying the familiar service of nine lessons and carols. The carols included many traditional favourites and lesser known works with the choir accompanied by David Simpkin and led by Alison Robinson leading the congregational hymns and performing choir items with moving sincerity.
With readers from all age groups and the service led by the seemingly indefatigable Sue Waterston it was a service that once again drew together villagers, their families and friends in joyful celebration. The final soaring descant to
"O come all ye faithful' signified that another Christmas was now upon us and we had enjoyed some respite and been given hope, albeit for a brief period, from the uncertainties and disappointments of a fractious world.

The Gorricks Bow Out
The communion service on November 20 marked the retriement from parish duties of Janet and David Gorrick. There was no formal announcement until coffee was served at the end of the service.
David and Janet have contributed widely to the life of the benefice and to Rempstone church. Their quiet, insightful comments in their addresses and intercessions have been very much appreciated. They will be greatly missed not only as officiating clergy but also as very good friends. We wish them a very long and peaceful retirement and look forward to welcoming them into our congregation.
Appeal for Bell Ringers
The East Leake bell ringing team cover all the bell ringing at East Leake, Rempstone and Stanford -on- Soar for Sunday services and special services such as weddings. The bells are usually rung at East Leake for the 9.30am service, at Rempstone for the 11.00am service and at Stanford-on-Soar as often as possible but this is increasingly difficult with the present band of ringers.
Open evenings will be held at Wednesday evening practices at Rempstone on January 11 and 18 and at the Friday practices on January 6 and 13. If you have been a ringer in the past and would like to take it up again or would like to find out more about starting please come along to one of the practices.
Further information is available from the Tower Captain, John Cooper on 853572 or the vice-captain, Phil Stanley on 07786963045 or any of the ringers.
30/12/11
Festival Celebration in Song

The first Harvest Supper to be held in the new Rempstone Village Hall was enjoyed by some 70 parishioners. The three course meal coooked by the ladies of the committee was followed with a short auction and raffle.
The Supper was on the day after the annual Harvest Thanksgiving Service which was held on an unseasonably warm afternoon at All Saints, Church. Led by Sue Waterston village children took part in the presentation of harvest gifts to the altar.
Popular harvest hymns and an anthem sung by the choir made it a joyous occasion for the rural community. The goods and produce together with the collection of £90 was donated to the Friary Drop In Centre in West Bridgford.
Steam Driven.......Church Profits
Record crowds drawn out by brilliant sunshine meant that Rempstone Steam Rally brought brisk business to the Church Stall. Home made cakes and jams were top sellers but book sales dipped against previous years.Church funds were boosted by £590 over the two days and grateful thanks go to everyone involved particularly Gloria and Brian Kenney, David and Jenny Walker and to the tent and furniture team of Richard Beeby, David and Dickon Jebson. One again we could not achieve any of this without the support given to us by the Rempstone Rally committee.

Rector Plans Spiritual Journey
The Rector, the Revd Glynis Hetherington is planning a ten week sabbatical study leave later this year.
She is to take the leave during September and October and it will include a time of retreat at Loyola Hall, Liverpool, followed by a period of reading, reflecting and gathering resources for accompanying people on their spiritul journey and leading quiet days and retreats.
Writing in the July issue of Compass, Revd Hetherington said: 'It is my hope that this time away will bring me spiritual refreshment and will deepen my relationship with God and that I will have more to offer in my ministry as I get alongside others who want to draw closer to God in prayer.'
Summer Fund Raiser
Poor weather did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of guests at the summer barbecue held to raise funds for Rempstone church.
The barbecue was supplemented with a wide range of side dishes and a pudding bar ended the meal on a sweet note. Guests enjoyed the gardens at Top Farm and Long Bank Barn and the efforts of hosts David and Jenny Simpkin and Roland and Caroline Gower plus their helpers and supporters meant that over £600 was raised for church funds.
Annual PCC Meeting
Chaired by the Rector and attended by last years PCC and three members of the public, the meeting re-elected Alan Wilson as church warden and a PCC from the nominated members. They were all thanked for the exemplary way in which they had carried out their duties over the past year.
The treasurer's report indicated that church finances were in a very satisfactory state with a small increase from the previous year. The church building was in a good state of repair with the new electrical work checked and completed. Some remedial plastering work is scheduled within a few weeks.
The Rector outlined plans for her forthcoming sabbatical which she plans to take later in the year.
In a general discussion it was suggested that copies of lthe lessons should be provided for the congregation. It was also agreed that in future the date and time of PCC meetings should be published in Compass and that the agenda and subsequent minutes be placed on the notice board at the back of the church.A suggestion that that a new up-to-date map of the churchyard will be produced was also agreed.
Sue Waterston explained the proposed changes to the Benefice management structure and the reasons why the reorganisation is deemed necessary.
There are currently 26 persons on the Church's electoral role.
Book of Remembrance
The Rempstone Church Book of Remembrance has recently been updated to the beginning of 2011. It can be found in the glazed cabinet to the left of the main door of the Church.
All the dates and names in this book are taken from the Church's Register of Burials and give the date on which the interment or the burial of the ashes took place. The actual date of death is not recorded in this book. Sometimes ashes are not interred in the church yard and therefore the name will not be in the register.

Pictures from Exhibition Boost
Church Funds
The Exhibition of work held in Church on April 9 and 10 by the Soar Valley U3A Art Group saw a steady stream of visitors over both days.
Glorious weather allowed visitors to enjoy refreshments outside and this plus the sale of fifteen pictures allowed £250 to be added to church funds.
Rempstone On Line
Aside from this web site, there is a further web site which contains an excellent account of the two Rempstone churches.
